This image depicts a close view of a male patient’s penis, revealing a primary syphilitic lesion on the penile shaft. From this view, the chancre appeared to exhibit a raw surface, similar to an open wound, while being ringed by a raised border. Syphilis is caused by the bacterial spirochete, Treponema pallidum.
