This image from 1969, depicted the hands of a patient from a dorsal perspective, highlighting degenerative changes that had affected the tips of his fingers and thumbs, determined to be due to autoamputation of the tissue, and an accompanying loss of sensation in the patient’s distal digits. The condition was diagnosed as a hereditary disorder known as hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy (HSAN), or hereditary sensory neuropathy (HSN). Due to the patient’s insensitivity to pain, one of the symptoms of HSN, there is often chronic occurrence of injuries to the hands and feet, thereby, resulting in what is noted here as a loss of the distal digits, also known as autoamputation.
