The face of this 78-year-old man showed the ravages of a disease known as, yaws, a nonvenereal endemic syphilis, caused by the Treponema pallidum subsp. pertenue spirochete. The condition shown here, depicted degenerative changes to the mid-face region, appearing as if it had sunken inward. This facial deformity is known as rhinopharyngitis mutilans, or gangosa. This case of yaws was of 50-years in duration.
