Depicted in this 2014 image is a Petri dish culture plate demonstrating the growth of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteria. Initially red-pink, the medium of mannitol-salt agar, is chemically-configured to turn yellow when S. aureus ferments the mannitol, lowering the pH, thereby, changing the color of the phenol red indicator dye.
