This close view of a patient’s hard palate, revealed a perforation in the midline of the palate’s midline, due to what was a congenital syphilis infection, caused by the bacterial spirochete, Treponema pallidum, which had been transferred to this individual, while still in the mother’s womb, by way of the placental circulation.
