This male infant was born with a condition known as congenital syphilis, due to the fact that his mother had been infected with the spirochete microorganism, Treponema pallidum, while pregnant, and transferred the infection to her child, by way of the placenta. Note the papular rash on his back, hips and buttocks, which is one of the possible symptoms of a congenital syphilitic infection.
