The left palm of this newborn infant’s hand, exhibited a copper colored rash, characteristic of congenital syphilis, caused by the fact that the baby’s mother had been infected by the spirochete bacterium, Treponema pallidum, and transferred the infection to her unborn infant by way of the placenta.
