This female infant was born with a condition known as congenital syphilis, due to the fact that while pregnant, her mother had been infected with the spirochete microorganism, Treponema pallidum. Note the papular rash on her chin and lips, as well as the darkly pigmented spots on the soles of her feet, which are some of the possible symptoms of a congenital syphilitic infection.
