This 1971 image depicted a Bangkok, Thailand ferry boat as it was in the process of shuttling local inhabitants from place to place, using the region’s canal system as its navigable waterways. This photograph was captured at a point in Thailand’s past when the canal waters were much cleaner than they are at present. Currently, due to industrialized pollution, it is not advisable for people to swim in these waters, nor use the water for purposes of cooking or consumption. In the background stood a number of businesses, frequented by canal travelers, which gave this canal its more common name of the Bangkok Market Canal.
