This 1971 image depicted a Bangkok, Thailand mother, and her four young children, who at the time were bathing in a canal, also known locally as a khlong, on which they lived. The mother appeared to be preparing a meal, as one child was standing on the house porch. This photograph was captured at a point in Thailand’s past, when the canal waters were clean enough for this type of activity. Currently, due to industrialized pollution, it is not advisable for people to swim in these waters, nor use the water for purposes of cooking or consumption.
