This illustration depicts a longitudinal section through an embryonated chicken egg, at a point midway through its development. The sectioning revealed the egg’s interior, which included the midterm embryo surrounded by its many protective membranes, and being fed by its nutrient rich yolk sac. The chicken embryo develops from a fertilized egg to a hatchling, over a period of 21-days. Contained within the egg was a yolk sac supplying nutrients, the allantois, which aids in the exchange of gasses and waste removal, and the amnion, which is a fluid filled sac surrounding the embryo, protecting it, cushioning it from adverse effects imposed by abrupt physical movements.
