This kneeling public health field worker, was in the process of examining a woman seated in a chair, who was diagnosed with a case of beriberi, due to a thiamine, or vitamin B1 deficiency. Note the pitting edema over her right shin, as the examiner applied pressure using his thumb, leaving an impression where his thumb had been.
