Magnified 7.4X, this image depicts a dorsal view of a red flower beetle, Tribolium castaneum, a member of the group known as the darkling beetles, due to their darkly colored elytra, or hard forewing. The red flower beetle is an agricultural pest, infesting stores of flour, cereals and pastas. As a human pathogen, at times, it is known to cause allergic reactions, but is not known to cause disease in human beings. See PHIL 23394 for a left lateral view of another T. castaneum specimen.
