Caption:
This image depicts the torso and upper extremities of a young child, being held by an adult, who was displaying the child’s hands for the camera. The hands exhibited some abnormal developmental characteristics, including stunted growth of what appeared to be the distal phalanx of each finger, as well as degenerated, and eroded nail growth on all fingers. These abnormalities were said to have been linked to the mother’s ingestion of medications during her pregnancy, including Dilantin® (phenytoin sodium), and Mysoline® (primidone).
