This right anterior-oblique view of a young Yugoslavian patient’s scalp exhibited symptoms of a cutaneous fungal infection known as favus, a form of tinea capitis, which had infected the scalp skin and its hair follicles. Note the thinning of the hair and crusts upon the scalp, also known as scutulae, in the area of the infection. This cutaneous illness was caused by the dermatophytic fungal organism, Trichophyton schoenleinii.
