From an anterior-superior view of this Yugoslavian patient’s scalp, you are able to see symptoms brought on by a cutaneous fungal infection known as favus, a form of tinea capitis, which had infected the scalp skin and the hair follicles. Note the thinning of the hair in the area of the infection, known as alopecia. This cutaneous illness was caused by the dermatophytic fungal organism, Trichophyton schoenleinii.
