This is a view of a Petri dish culture plate that had contained a growth medium of trypticase soy agar, which had been inoculated with Enterobacter sakazakii bacteria. The culture had given rise to a number of mucoid, wrinkled-type colonies, after three days at 25°C. E. sakazakii is a Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium, and is associated with a rare, but often fatal form of neonatal meningitis, with a mortality rate of 40% to 80%.
