Under a magnification of 1000X, this photomicrograph revealed the presence of a deformed red blood cell (RBC), or erythrocyte (arrowhead) in the shape of a sickle, giving this form of anemia its name, sickle cell, in a case of the genetic condition, sickle cell disease (SCD). In SCD, the sickle cells die early, which causes a constant shortage of RBCs. Also, when they travel through small blood vessels, they get stuck and clog the blood flow. This can cause pain and other serious problems including infection, acute chest syndrome, and stroke.
