This photomicrograph revealed some of the histopathology associated with a granuloma inguinale, or Donovanosis lesion, in particular, some mononuclear cells, as well as the presence of intracellular Donovan bodies This illness is caused by the bacterium, Klebsiella granulomatis, formerly known as Calymmatobacterium granulomatis, and even earlier Donovania granulomatis. The causative organism is difficult to culture, and diagnosis requires visualization of dark staining Donovan bodies on tissue crush preparation from a biopsy.
