This photomicrograph of a sputum culture sample, revealed the presence of numerous Gram-negative rods, or bacilli, as well as some ovoid-shaped, coccal bacteria, in the case of a patient diagnosed with pneumonia. Note the accompanying white blood cells (WBCs), otherwise known as leukocytes amongst the sputum matrix.
