Seen from a medial view, the right leg of this patient in the region of the knee, displayed numerous cutaneous lesions that were diagnosed as the result of a disease process known as actinomycosis, or mycetoma, caused by the Gram-positive, fungus-like aerobic bacteria of the order Actinomycetales. Mycetoma is a slowly progressive, destructive infection of the cutaneous and subcutaneous tissues, fascia, and can progress to a point where it can affect bone as well.
