Using a fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-labeled monoclonal antibody, specific for the envelope glycoprotein of Herpes simplex virus 1 and 2 (HSV-1, HSV-2), and a technique known as immunofluorescence, this photomicrograph of a smear specimen, taken from a genital ulcer, revealed the presence of HSV-2, also known as genital herpes. Using monoclonal antibodies, immunofluorescence microscopy can identify the organisms with higher sensitivity than conventional microscopy.
