Using a technique known as immunofluorescence, this photomicrograph of a genital smear specimen, revealed the presence of the herpes simplex virus-2 (HSV-2), also known as genital herpes. Using monoclonal antibodies, immunofluorescence microscopy can identify the organisms with higher sensitivity than conventional microscopy.
