This is one in a series of twenty-four images (PHIL 16125 - 16148) captured at a memorial ceremony exhibit entitled, “Honoring Dr. Stephen B. Thacker”. In this particular photograph, Dr. Thacker was in the process of delivering a speech while standing at a CDC podium. The location and type of event is unknown. Dr. Thacker, a retired Assistant Surgeon General in the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS), most recently the Director of the Office of Surveillance, Epidemiology, and Laboratory Services (OSELS), served with distinction in key CDC positions, including Deputy Director (Acting), during a career that spanned more than 36-years. He was the recipient of two of the USPHS's highest individual honors, the Distinguished Service Medal and the Surgeon General's Medal. Throughout his public service, he provided essential support to the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) series of publications.
