This is one in a series of twenty-four images (PHIL 16125 - 16148) captured at a memorial ceremony exhibit entitled, “Honoring Dr. Stephen B. Thacker”. Depicted here, was an opened notebook, which was kept by Dr. Thacker. This one in particular was used to document his 1978 trips to Cairo, Egypt. Dr. Thacker, a retired Assistant Surgeon General in the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS), most recently the Director of the Office of Surveillance, Epidemiology, and Laboratory Services (OSELS), served with distinction in key CDC positions, including Deputy Director (Acting), during a career that spanned more than 36-years. He was the recipient of two of the USPHS's highest individual honors, the Distinguished Service Medal and the Surgeon General's Medal. Throughout his public service, he provided essential support to the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) series of publications.
