Description:This is one in a series of twenty-four images (PHIL 16125 - 16148) captured at a memorial ceremony exhibit entitled, “Honoring Dr. Stephen B. Thacker”. This image depicts the cover a book entitled, “Inside the Outbreaks”, by Mark Pendergrast. This copy had been signed by the author, which read, “For Steve Thacker, Without you this book would never have been possible! Mark Pendergrast”.
"Inside the Outbreaks" portrays the history of the Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS), in which Dr. Thacker served from July, 1976 to June, 1978.

“The Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) is a unique 2-year post-graduate training program of service and on-the-job learning for health professionals interested in the practice of applied epidemiology.” Dr. Thacker’s career at the CDC began with his service in EIS in 1976.

The photographic series was compiled March, 2013. The CDC Public Health Library and Information Center hosted an exhibit honoring Dr. Thacker’s life and contributions to the CDC. The exhibit remained on display from early February, through the EIS Conference in late April of 2013.
