Under a magnification of 500X, this photomicrograph revealed numerous microconidia of the dermatophytic fungal organism, Trichophyton rubrum, still attached to filamentous stalks called conidiophores. Microconidia are the specialized reproductive cells, also referred to as mitospores, for these reproductive structures are born out of the process of mitosis, and are therefore, haploid when they reach maturity.
