The face of this woman showed the ravages of a disease known as, yaws, a nonvenereal endemic syphilis, caused by the Treponema pallidum subsp. pertenue spirochete. The condition shown here, depicting degenerative changes that caused the area of her face to sink inward, is known as rhinopharyngitis mutilans.
