This 1962 photograph depicted the head of a young Panamanian girl, who was suffering from Chagas disease, that manifested as an acute infection which included swelling of her right eye, otherwise known as Romaña's sign. Chagas Disease is caused by the parasitic protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, and is transmitted while the insect vector from the family Reduviidae, subfamily Triatominae, is blood-feeding on a human host.
