This image from 1980, depicted Dr. William Wagner, as he was in the process of reading results of an analysis produced by a Beckman gamma counter, which measures the amount of gamma rays emitted by a radioactive substance known as a radionuclide, i.e., an atom with an unstable nucleus. Gamma counters are used in the development of new radioactive compounds, mainly those used in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
