This historic January 15th, 1968 photograph depicted a Ghanaian public health field technician in the process of administering a smallpox vaccination to a child’s right upper arm, using a Ped-O-Jet® pneumatic injector. The procedure was taking place amidst a large crowd of people who had gathered to celebrate the administration of the 25-millionth smallpox vaccination that took place in Ghana, during the 19-Country, West African Smallpox Eradication Program. The name of that vaccinee was Rebecca Ansah Asamoah. In 1977, the last case of naturally-contracted smallpox was recorded in Somalia.
