This graph entitled, Fertility rates – United States, 1917-1997, reveals the number of children per woman, aged 14-49 years, over an eighty year period. Note the gradual birth rate drop off, until approximately 1937, when the end of World War II spawned a drastic increase in birth rate, which lasted until approximately 1977, otherwise referred to as the baby boom. Since 1977, the U.S. birth rate has remained virtually constant through 1997, at 2 births per woman.
