This image shows a grouping of oblong highly-textured fruits known as bitter melon. These were of the subcontinent variety, and are found growing on the Indian subcontinent. See PHIL 15580, for a view of what is referred to as the smoother skinned Chinese variety. A number of medicinal attributes have been ascribed to these fruits including anticancer properties, they’re eaten as a folk remedy for their antihelmintic ability, killing intestinal nematodes, as an antimalarial, and antiviral. Studies indicate a possible cardioprotective attribute, as well as possible antidiabetic properties, and uses in weight loss therapy to name a few.
