Under a magnification of 50X, this hematoxylin and eosin (H&E)-stained human skin tissue sample, reveals some of the histopathologic changes found in a smallpox lesion, also known as a plaque or pock, hence the name. At this point in the disease process, you will note marked edema in the upper layers of the epithelium, involving primarily the epidermal layers, where numerous vacuoles had formed and had begun to coalesce, thereby, causing the more superficial layers to begin to come free of the underlying strata, a process known as ballooning degeneration.
