Caption:
This was the left hand of an infant, who was depicted in the series of images, PHIL 15402-15408, and who had been born with a chromosomal disorder known as Trisomy 18, Trisomy E, and by the eponym Edwards syndrome, affecting 1 in 5000 births, and is three times more common in girls than in boys. Some of the symptoms include mental delay, microcephaly, micrognathia, rounded or rocker bottom feet, low-set ears, and clenched hands. An infant suspected of possessing this chromosomal variation will display unusual fingerprint patterns, and upon x-ray examination, a shortened breastbone, or sternum. A chromosomal examination will reveal trisomy, partial trisomy, or a translocation phenomenon of chromosome 18.
