Description:This image depicts the hands of a clinician retracting the lids of both eyes of a young child, each of which displaying the characteristic cloudiness of the eye’s lens known as a cataract. Of note, is that these bilateral nuclear rubella-associated cataracts were not visible at the time of this child’s birth. The age of this child is not known.
The birth defects associated with rubella if the disease is acquired by a pregnant woman include deafness, cataracts, heart defects, mental retardation, and liver and spleen damage (at least a 20% chance of damage to the fetus if a woman is infected early in pregnancy).
