The three glass microscope slides depicted here, illustrate the variable of smear thickness when preparing a fecal smear sample to be examined under the optics of a microscope. These three slide samples were unpreserved, and had yet to undergo a staining procedure. The top slide (A) yielded the correct smear thickness to be processed for examination, while the middle slide yielded an inadequate, thin smear preparation, and the bottom yielded an overly thick smear preparation. Also, one needs to take into account that more than one specimen should be examined in order to achieve a more accurate diagnosis.
