Description:This image depicts five Petri dish culture plates that had been filled with an agar-based medium of yeast extract, cysteine, and ferric pyrophosphate, to which high concentrations of D- or L-tyrosine, or D- or L-phenylalanine had been added. These plates had been inoculated with cultures of various strains of Legionella pneumophila.
Note that “browning” of the medium had occurred when L. pneumophila had been grown in the presence of high concentrations of L-tyrosine, and to a certain extent L-phenylalanine, but no browning when the D-isomers were included in the mixture. Note PHIL 2135, 2136, 15259, 15330, 15331, and 15760, for other views of this nutrient-dependent phenomenon.
