This image depicted an infant mouse at necropsy, just prior to an internal examination of the abdominal cavity (see PHIL 14638), which had succumbed to the pathogenic effects of the mouse hepatitis coronavirus (MHV), formerly known as the lethal intestinal virus of infant mice (LIVIM). This virus causes lethal enteritis, and upon pathologic investigation, the intestinal tracts of this deceased mouse showed marked flaccidity, i.e., an atonicity, and contained watery, yellowish material. Of note, was the fact that only the intestines showed any histopathologic changes. The infant mouse exhibited a lack of a normal, healthy pink coloration.
