Caption:
This image depicted five Petri dish culture plates that had contained an agar-based medium of yeast extract, cysteine, and ferric pyrophosphate, to which D- or L-tyrosine, or D- or L-phenylalanine had been added. These plates had been inoculated with cultures of various strains of Legionella pneumophila. Note that browning of the medium had occurred when L. pneumophila had been grown in the presence of high concentrations of L-tyrosine, and to a certain extent L-phenylalanine, but no browning occurred when the D-isomers were included in the mixture. Note PHIL 2135, 2136,15329, 15330, 15331, and 15760, for other views of this nutrient-dependent phenomenon.
