Description:Under a magnification of 500X, this Gridley-stained photomicrograph revealed the presence of the algal organism Prototheca filamenta.
Members of this genus Prototheca at times cause an illnesses in people known as protothecosis, infecting skin, lymph nodes, eyes, myocardium, kidneys, and muscle. It resembles a fungus under the microscope, but is an achlorophyllous mutant of the green alga Chlorella.
