This image depicts the glans penis of a patient who was diagnosed as having balanitis xerotica obliterans (BXO). Commonly occurring on the glans penis and foreskin, as was the case here, BXO involves the evolution of white patches of atrophic skin, and a ring of indurated tissue surrounding the urethral meatus, which could become a stricture that can cause urinary retention with eventual damage to the bladder and kidneys. The cause of BXO is uncertain, ranging from human papilloma virus (HPV), to spirochetes, mycobacteria, and bacterial balanitis. Autoimmune disorders may also be associated with this condition.
