Description:This image depicts the penis of a patient in a clinical setting being treated for a case of balanitis, which in this particular instance, had been attributed to this patient’s diabetic condition, and was therefore, labeled diabetic balanitis.
Balanitis is an inflammatory condition of the glans penis, and if the prepuce is involved, the condition is more precisely known as balanoposthitis. In this particular case, the cause of this inflammatory state was due to an underlying diabetic condition, however, balanitis can be caused by a fungal agent such as Candida spp., a bacteria, most commonly Streptococcus sp., or a viral pathogen such as herpes genitalis.
