Caption:
This unknown species of hamster was infected with two pathologic entities, Leishmaniasis brasiliensis, and an unknown species of ear mite from the genus, Notoedres. Both of these parasitic pathogens cause a chronic granulomatous inflammatory response in the affected cutaneous tissues. The mites cause what is known as, notoedric mange, infesting the skin of this hamster’s left ear, manifesting as scabby nodules due to the nymphal staged mites burrowing into the skin.
