From 1975, this image depicted a side view of a typical light microscope, equipped with a substage condenser, the purpose of which was to focus the illumination beam. The substage condenser was created by Ernst Abbe, and was used in controlling a microscope’s light source, through which an illumination beam is concentrated, and uniformly spread across the entire field of view.
