Description:This photograph was taken during a blood pressure (BP) screening exercise that was being conducted by Centers for Disease Control (CDC) nurses in order to help employees monitor their blood pressure. In this particular view, a civilian employee, Shonia Zollicoffer, was seated opposite United States Public Health Service (USPHS), Cmdr. Amy Valderrama, while Cmdr. Valderrama was in the process of providing educational material to Ms. Zollicoffer. Note the stethoscope draped around the Commander’s neck, which she’d use to assist in recording the patient’s BP.
High blood pressure can lead to a heart attack or stroke. Unfortunately, 1 in 3 adults in the United States have high blood pressure, also called hypertension. Million Hearts seeks to prevent one million heart attacks and strokes over the next five years by empowering Americans to make heart-healthy lifestyle choices, and improve care for those needing treatment. Sponsored by the CDC’s Office of Women’s Health, the Association of Professional Women, and the Division of Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention, screenings are held each year in observance of National Women’s Health Week, May 13th – 19th, during the National High Blood Pressure Education Month of May, as well as National Nurses Week, May 6th – 12th, and on National Employee Health and Fitness Day, May 18th.
