Caption:
Under a magnification of 610X, this photomicrograph of a Papanicolaou-stained (Pap-stained) vaginal tissue biopsy specimen, revealed some of the histopathologic changes found to be indicative of adenocarcinoma of the vagina. This case involved a teenage girl, and it was believed that the onset of her cancer might have been because the patient’s mother had taken diethylstilbestrol (DES) while pregnant, as a treatment to avoid a possible spontaneous abortion. See PHIL 14767, for a slightly higher magnification of these abnormal vaginal epithelial cells. DES daughters are at increased risk for a wide range of abnormalities involving the Müllerian-derived portion of the genital tract, including clear cell adenocarcinoma (CCA) of the vagina and cervix, genital malformations, infertility and adverse pregnancy outcomes. In addition, DES daughters may be at increased risk for development of cervical dysplasia.
