Photographed by a U.S. Navy photographer in Betania, Nicaragua, this 2008 image depicts U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) Lt. Cmdr. Gary Brunette in the process of cleaning and applying fluoride to the teeth of a young Nicaraguan child, so that over time, the enamel of his teeth would be strengthened.

Lt. Cmdr. Brunette was embarked aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3), which was supporting the Caribbean phase of operation Continuing Promise (CP) 2008, an equal-partnership mission between the United States, Canada, the Netherlands, Brazil, Nicaragua, Panama, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana.
