Caption:
This epidemiologic field technician was strategically placing aluminum phosphide tablets throughout an environment known to be inhabited by a population of rock squirrels that were overrun by exploding numbers of fleas harboring the plague bacterium, Yersinia pestis. These tablets would act as a toxic fumigant used to control the rock squirrel population directly. Rodenticidal grain baits, if registered by the EPA, can be used in some instances to provide longer-term rodent control. One rodenticide, cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3), has been registered for use in New Mexico, and holds great promise for the control of field rodents involved in plague epizootics. PHIL 14333, shows you different formulations of cholecalciferol.
