This image depicts an unknown species of rabbit of the genus, Sylvilagus, which was camouflaged in its rocky environment. Sylvilagus spp., along with the thirteen-lined ground squirrel, S. tridecemlineatus (PHIL 14308), the golden mantle ground squirrel, Spermophilus lateralis (PHIL 14309), chipmunks, Tamias spp. (PHIL 14310), spotted ground squirrels, S. spilosoma, (PHIL 14312), and antelope ground squirrels, Ammospermophilus leucurus, (PHIL 14313, on right), have all been found to be involved in various plague epizootics.
